A 17-year-old wanted for the murder of innocent bystander Belinda Sarkodie has turned himself in to Hamilton police following a four-month manhunt for the alleged teenaged gunman.

The 26-year-old Sarkodie was shot by a bullet meant for someone else while she waited for a bus in front of a busy Jackson Square around 5:30 p.m. on July 11. A man in his 20s, who was among a group of men who were the intended targets, was shot but survived.

“It’s a great day for Hamilton,” Chief Frank Bergen said at a news conference announcing the high-profile arrest Wednesday.

He called it a “watershed moment” for the city, one where the community can celebrate good police work, but also “recognize and acknowledge that the trajectory of youth violence in the community is unacceptable.”
