STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — With the holidays right around the corner, the Fire Department of New York to take extra care this year, especially in the kitchen.

In a new public service announcement, the FDNY is warning New Yorkers about the risk of fires, particularly in kitchens.

Most fires, according to the fire department, start in the kitchen, many from food being left unattended while cooking.

The FDNY recommends always keeping an eye on the pots and pans being used to cook, and to turn their handles inward so they cannot be accidentally bumped or grabbed.

In case of a pan fire, do not use water to put it out as this can start a grease fire, the fire department warns. Instead, use a lid or baking soda to smother the flames.
