The fire that destroyed a historic Toronto churc h last year and more than a dozen murals by the Group of Seven is now being treated as suspected arson, the church said.
The 117-year-old St. Anne’s Anglican Church in Little Portugal burned in June 2024, with Toronto Fire Services saying at the time it was “highly unlikely” it could save anything inside the building.
“We are devastated to hear that the fire that destroyed the congregation of St. Anne’s building on Gladstone may have been deliberately set,” bishop Kevin Robertson said in a statement . “As this new reality sinks in, we pray for the congregation of St. Anne’s ... We pray for the person or persons who may have perpetrated this act, that they might seek forgiveness and healing.”
