A proposal to open a new cannabis and vape store on Main Street in Niverville has been denied by town council, following a long discussion about setback rules, provincial guidelines, and whether the requested variance was simply too big.

The application, submitted by Katen and Jatin Patel, asked Council to reduce the required distance between the store and nearby youth-related spaces, from the current 1,000-foot provincial guideline down to 377 feet. The location in question sits at Unit A, 237 Main Street.

Town CAO Eric King explained the issue in simple terms during the public hearing.

“This variance is requested as a prerequisite for an application to establish a new cannabis and vape store,” King said. “The reduction from 1,000 feet to 377 feet represents a setback variance of 62.3%
