An active discussion about reforming the government of Waterloo Region is underway.

Officials in Waterloo Region and other two-tier municipalities are getting signals from the Government of Ontario that changes will be made before the next municipal elections, which happen a year from now.

The talk includes predictions that:

The regional chair will be appointed by the province, not elected.

There will be no more directly elected regional councillors after fall 2026.

Only mayors will sit on regional council, and their votes would be weighted so that those representing larger populations would have more influence.

Robert Williams, a Waterloo-Region based consultant on municipal government, said: “I have it on good authority that this will be implemented in York Region.”
