CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - A new state bill aims to increase oversight of high-volume dog breeders to protect dogs from mistreatment.
This comes as a nationwide report ranks Ohio as one of the worst states for puppy mills.
State Senator Casey Weinstein (D-Hudson) is the owner of two rescue dogs himself, Xander and Daisy.
He is fighting for more oversight with Senate Bill 232 .
“It’s really upsetting because it’s not in line with the love we have for these animals,” Weinstein said.
Weinstein is working on closing loopholes, like changing the definition of dog breeders to any establishment with six or more breeding dogs, instead of basing the definition on the number of dogs they sell.
