PLYMOUTH, N.C. (WITN) - The Plymouth Food Pantry closed its doors permanently Tuesday after the town council ordered it to vacate by December 1 because it did not have a lease.
Mayor-elect Crystal Davis said she presented the food pantry with a lease to bring it into compliance, but pantry officials refused. Multiple people with the food pantry said that claim is false.
“We were never presented with a lease, unfortunately,” said Hayley Taffer, a food pantry volunteer. “I know that is being said in some social media outlets, but we were not presented with a lease.”
The food pantry had around 11 volunteers. Executive Director Sam Rogers said the pantry had permission from the town to operate without a lease for decades.
