A large storm starting on Black Friday is lining up to bring snow, squalls, rain, and gusty winds to parts of the Northeast as millions head home from the holiday.
AccuWeather meteorologists say that a separate system moving through now will be followed by another over the weekend, threatening widespread travel delays Saturday, Nov. 29, into Sunday, Nov. 30.
“Many families traveling in the eastern half of the country will likely encounter delays and disruptions before the end of the weekend," AccuWeather Vice President of Forecasting Operations Dan DePodwin said. “A record number of travelers combined with two large storms before and then after Thanksgiving Day is a recipe for trouble."
Thunderstorms, fog, snow, and gusty winds could slow travel across parts of the Midwest, Southeast, and East Coast overnight Tuesday, Nov. 25 through Wednesday night, Nov. 26, according to AccuWeather.
"The storm after Thanksgiving Day could cause even more widespread travel issues than the storm pushing through right now," DePodwin said.
The busy Interstate 95 corridor should stay relatively quiet, with flurries Friday, Nov. 28, a blast of cold air on Saturday, Nov. 29, and rain moving in later Sunday.
“Cold air building in Canada will surge south into the US just in time for the holiday weekend, leading to strong winds, heavy snow and travel disruptions,” DePodwin said. “Although most of the country will have dry weather on Thanksgiving, the Great Lakes and Northeast will be blasted with the most widespread lake-effect snow event of the season so far.”
Snow squalls and snow showers are likely in parts of the Northeast, including New York, northern New Jersey, much of Pennsylvania, and western Maryland at times Wednesday into Friday.
DePodwin said people planning to drive on Thanksgiving Day through Black Friday “across the Great Lakes and interior Northeast should leave extra time, check for road closures, and pack bottled water, blankets, and other supplies in the event they encounter major travel delays.”
There will be wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph at times on Friday and Friday night.
“The high winds may cause power outages, especially across Buffalo and western New York state starting Wednesday night into Thursday,” DePodwin warned.
Flight delays are likely on Wednesday and Thursday in the Northeast, Great Lakes, and Midwest, including Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, and New York City.
Thanksgiving Day Parade winds in New York City are forecast to stay below 30 mph, though an earlier arrival of stronger gusts could affect balloon flights.
