Cross-Country Storm Will Start Active Thanksgiving Week Weather

A powerful storm will disrupt travel plans for many across the US, before another system takes shape later this week as the forecast for Thanksgiving Day has been updated.

AccuWeather says the storm will track across the central and eastern US in the days leading up to Thanksgiving, with impacts including heavy rain, mountain snow, severe thunderstorms, and strong winds. 

The storm’s timing couldn’t be worse, as AAA expects about 82 million people to travel at least 50 miles for the holiday, setting up the potential for widespread delays on the roads and in the air.

By Tuesday, Nov. 25, the system will push into the Mississippi Valley and Midwest, bringing more rain, wind, and severe weather. Snow is expected over the Midwest on Wednesday, Nov. 26, while showers and thunderstorms shift along the East Coast, threatening travel on the busy Interstate 95 corridor.

Rain is expected to arrive early in the afternoon on Tuesday, Nov. 25 and continue into just past midnight on Thanksgiving Eve Day on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

A second storm will move onto the West Coast late Tuesday, Nov. 25, and may track across the country through Thanksgiving week, adding to the travel headaches.

Despite early-week disruptions, forecasters say there is good news for Thanksgiving Day itself. 

A change in the weather pattern is in store starting on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 27, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-40s.

It will be partly to mostly sunny with blustery conditions in most of the eastern US on Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, Nov. 27.

The sunshine is expected to stick around for Black Friday, Nov. 28, with temperatures dropping a few degrees but staying near normal for late November in the Northeast.

AccuWeather notes that conditions will settle later in the week, bringing some relief for those traveling closer to Thanksgiving Day.
