On Monday night at Temple Emanu-El in Helena , more than a dozen volunteers packed boxes filled with a lesson plan called “Standing Up to Hate,” created by the Montana Jewish Project.

The 50-to-90-minute lesson includes a book based on a true 1993 incident in Billings where neo-Nazis threw a brick through a Jewish family’s window, which was displaying a menorah.

This came during a high level of violence and hate directed toward multiple minority groups in Billings. In response to the brick being thrown, many community members cut out paper menorahs and put them in their windows, regardless of whether they were celebrating Hanukkah or not.

The lesson plan also includes discussion questions, activities and links to other resources. Teachers request the boxes on their own, Montana Jewish
