An Alabama mother is behind bars, charged with trying to kill her infant daughter.
Lee County sheriff’s deputies responded shortly after 12:30 a.m. Monday to a 911 call about a woman trying to smother her 4-month-old daughter.
Deputies arrived at the Phenix City home on Lee Road 212 about eight minutes after receiving the emergency call, sheriff’s officials said.
Witnesses told authorities that 28-year-old Mireire Johana Garcia Lucero was trying to suffocate her baby. They also said they saw her choke and shake the baby to get her to stop crying.
The infant was taken by ambulance to Piedmont Hospital in Columbus. At the time of transport, authorities said the baby was alert and seemed to be in good health.
