HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. — Police in Hamilton County are investigating a reported threat that led to the closure of part of U.S. 31 Tuesday evening.

According to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a report of a man who was seen inside a residence in the 22700 block of U.S. 31 around 5:30 p.m.

Witnesses told police the man was on the second floor of a house, reportedly armed with a rifle and making threats with the gun toward someone outside of the building.

According to an INDOT alert, police closed the southbound lanes of U.S. 31 at 236th Street during the investigation.

Police searched the house and surrounding property, which is owned by INDOT, but found the house to be unoccupied.

U.S. 31 was closed for about two hours, reopening shortly before 7:45 p.m.
