Richard Branson announced Tuesday on Instagram that his wife of five decades has died at 80.

Branson said he is “heartbroken” after the death of his wife, Joan Templeman, describing her as “my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world.” A cause of death was not revealed.

In a tribute reflecting on their years together, Branson said she was “the most wonderful mum and grandmum” their family could have hoped for, and ended his message with a simple, tender farewell: “Love you forever, Joan.”

Templeman, who grew up in Glasgow, largely remained out of the public eye while Branson built the Virgin Group , a multinational brand that began as a small record store and grew into an empire spanning airlines, music, telecommunications, hotels and space travel.
