After years of sitting empty, one of the city’s most prominent commercial spaces has opened its doors as Furniture Land, a home-furnishing retailer known for its large showrooms and broad selection.

The store is housed in the former Costco building at the corner of Bradley and Stowell roads.

The 70,000 square-foot structure has been vacant since 2017, when Costco relocated from the site it had occupied since November 1988 and moved to a larger warehouse farther south on Bradley Road near Betteravia.

For nearly three decades, the original store served as a retail anchor in one of Santa Maria’s busiest corridors, surrounded by businesses such as BevMo, Michaels and Trader Joe’s. Since the relocation, the enormous concrete building had become one of the area’s most noticeable empty spaces.
