NORTH VERNON, Ind. – The North Vernon Police Department (NVPD) has honored Sgt. Austin Grunden for his exceptional actions during a medical emergency on Friday, November 14.

Grunden was dispatched to the area of North Elm Street near West O & M Avenue at around 8:40 p.m., after Jennings County Dispatch received a report of an unconscious driver inside a vehicle. An off-duty Jackson County EMS member was already on scene and believed the individual to be suffering from an overdose.

Sgt. Grunden and Officer Holt arrived moments later and located a female driver slumped over inside a running vehicle. She appeared awake but extremely lethargic, displayed constricted pupils, and struggled to speak—clear signs consistent with opioid impairment. A four-milligram dose of Narcan was administere
