School board trustees have been an institution in Ontario since 1816. But after more than 200 years, could they be doomed across the province?

Paul Calandra, the education minister in Doug Ford’s government, has made it clear that’s a possibility as he pushes for an overhaul of Ontario’s $32-billion school system and takes aim at what he’s called an “outdated” model — including trustees.

All this is playing out against a backdrop of mounting criticism, with Queen’s Park having placed five boards under supervision, including the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and London-based Thames Valley District School Board. That essentially strips their trustees of any and all decision-making power.
