Local services and residents of Dubrovnik were busy clearing beaches near the stone walls of the Croatian city’s medieval center Wednesday after a winter storm pushed tons of trash onto the shore overnight.

The beaches and coastal areas were littered with plastic, driftwood and other debris.

According to local media, powerful southern winds forced the rubbish from the direction of Albania.

Garbage also covered some beaches in North Albania after severe weather conditions and floods hit the country earlier this week.

Albania's Civil Protection Agency said that in the Lezha region in the country's northwest, some 220 hectares (544 acres) of land remains submerged.

The forecast announced torrential rain to continue in the upcoming days.
