Lockdown measures in place during the Covid-19 pandemic have been linked to an increase in developmental concerns in young children in Scotland. A new study by the University of Edinburgh found after accounting for pre-pandemic trends, there was an increase in the proportion of toddlers showing any developmental issues throughout the period of lockdown and social distancing measures between March 2020 and August 2021. ‌

Researchers from the university studied more than 250,000 children in Scotland as part of the research. Increases of up to 6.6 per cent were identified by the study which suggested the increase was greater for those who experienced a longer period of social distancing measures. ‌
