A Long Island man will spend decades in prison after a jury found him guilty of repeatedly sexually abusing his young daughter over the course of a year, prosecutors said.
The 33-year-old defendant — a Bay Shore man whose name is being withheld to protect the identity of the child victim — was sentenced to 23 years in prison, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced on Wednesday, Nov. 26.
The man was convicted in October of first-degree course of sexual conduct against a child, first-degree incest, and endangering the welfare of a child.
Tierney said the sentence reflects the severity of the crimes and the trauma inflicted on the girl, who was just 8 and 9 years old when the abuse occurred.
Abuse Lasted A Year, Prosecutors Say
According to evidence presented at trial, the child lived with her mother and father on alternating weeks between October 2021 and November 2022. Prosecutors said the abuse occurred during the weeks she was in her father’s care. The defendant also threatened to beat the child if she disclosed what was happening.
In fall 2022, the girl’s mother noticed her daughter growing extremely anxious before visits with her father. In November 2022, the child disclosed the abuse, and her mother immediately helped her report it to police. The defendant was arrested on Nov. 8, 2022.
Following the guilty verdict on Oct. 10 this year, he was remanded to jail pending sentencing.
The defendant's sentence will be followed by 20 years of post-release supervision.
