Shawnee parents and community members are coming together to try and stop the closure of Martin Luther King Elementary School after Jefferson County Public Schools announced that it was one of three to be closed by next fall in an effort to cut costs.

On Nov. 20, JCPS announced plans to close three schools and move two others as a cost-saving measure to combat the massive budget deficit the district faces . Under the proposal, Zachary Taylor Elementary and Liberty High will be closed and King Elementary, the Shawnee neighborhood’s last remaining elementary, will be merged with Maupin Elementary in the Parkland neighborhood.

But local community members and parents are fighting the proposal, asking JCPS not only to keep King open but also to invest more into the school to help students
