Councilmember Julie Menin — whose district covers the East Side of Manhattan and Roosevelt Island — claimed in a release that she has enough votes to become the next speaker of the City Council.
Menin says she has secured the support of at least 35 current and incoming council members, which she says would be a supermajority. At least 26 votes, a majority of the 51-member council, are needed to take the position.
Councilmember and majority whip Selvena Brooks-Powers, who had also been campaigning for speaker, conceded to Menin in a statement.
