Hampton Roads is home to more than a handful of former Radio City Rockettes, and they are celebrating the dance troupe’s 100th anniversary this year.

Shirley Cholek, 71, of Virginia Beach, recently returned from alumni festivities in New York City. She joined hundreds of other fellow former dancers for the Christmas Spectacular show at Radio City Music Hall and a large fundraising gala at Hotel Edison in Times Square.

“It was fabulous,” she said. “Lots of reuniting.”

Cholek is an active member of Virginia Beach Silver Tappers, a senior dance group, and takes classes at Golden Slippers Dance Academy. She recently reminisced with academy owner Susan Browney, 70, also a former Rockette.
