CLEVELAND, Ohio — A new coalition is lobbying to keep Burke Lakefront Airport open, standing in opposition to Mayor Justin Bibb’s desire to enlist Congress’ help so that the airport can be closed sooner.
The Lakefront Airport Preservation Partnership sent a letter to U.S. senators Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted, U.S. Rep. Shontel Brown and U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and asked for help keeping the airport open. This came almost one month after Bibb asked the same lawmakers to help close it.
Cleveland has long debated whether to close city-owned Burke. But Bibb’s recent request to members of Congress is one of the strongest public moves yet toward shuttering the downtown airport and reclaiming 450 acres on the lakefront for new development.
