WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) - Police busted an illegal cockfighting ring Saturday evening, arresting seven men from Connecticut and New York on animal cruelty charges.

The raid took place in a room above a garage on Front Avenue after the city received a tip about cockfighting and men arguing in the area.

According to the police report, when officers arrived there were cars everywhere and people running from the building. Some participants even tried to take roosters with them as they fled.

The first officer on scene said he could hear the roosters as he got closer to the building. Inside, police found a makeshift fighting ring.

“Multiple roosters were observed in boxes and inside cabinets. Also observed were dead roosters and blood inside a trash can,” the police report stated.
