Two West Virginia National Guard members who deployed to the nation's capital were shot Wednesday just blocks from the White House in a shocking act of violence that has left the city reeling.

FBI Director Kash Patel and Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed that the Guard members were hospitalized in critical condition, with Bowser describing the incident as a "targeted shooting." Meanwhile Trump raged at the shooters on social media.

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey initially said the troops had died, but later backtracked, saying his office was "receiving conflicting reports" about their condition. The governor's office did not immediately respond to questions about the attack and the current state of the wounded soldiers.
