Two members of the National Guard have been shot in Washington DC, prompting a significant emergency response near the White House. The incident occurred at the intersection of 17th Street Northwest and I Street Northwest, an area that houses the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, where many White House staffers work. Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene, and reports indicate that at least one helicopter landed on the National Mall as part of the response. The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody, stating, "The scene is secured. One suspect is in custody." US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the shooting, tweeting, "Please join me in praying for the two National Guardsmen who were just shot moments ago in Washington D.C. @DHSgov is working with local law enforcement to gather more information." Three victims were transported to hospital, according to Washington DC's fire department and emergency medical services. However, they did not disclose the condition of the injured or confirm their identities. In response to the shooting, the White House was placed on lockdown. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, "The White House is aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation. The President has been briefed." At the time of the incident, President Donald Trump was in Florida at his West Palm Beach golf course. He was seen with First Lady Melania Trump after arriving at Palm Beach International Airport. The Joint DC Task Force is also responding to the incident, although a spokesperson did not immediately confirm whether any National Guard members were involved. The Metropolitan Police Department is continuing to investigate the shooting and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
