The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) has reached a $15.77 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit involving allegations of abuse by two former teachers at John Ware School. The settlement, which is pending court approval, addresses claims of sexual, physical, and psychological abuse that occurred between 1988 and 2004. The lawsuit named former teachers Michael Gregory and Fred Archer, along with the CBE, as defendants. Gregory, who taught at John Ware for 20 years, faced 17 charges of sexual assault and exploitation in 2021 but died shortly after the charges were filed. Archer, who worked at the school in the 1990s, has a history of sexual assault convictions from his time at another school. The class-action suit was initiated by three representative plaintiffs who alleged that the CBE failed to act on reports of abuse and did not implement adequate policies to protect students. In a statement, the CBE expressed regret for the harm caused to the victims and acknowledged the courage of those who came forward. "The CBE is sorry for the harm experienced by the class members and the impact of that harm on them," the statement read. It also noted that the settlement includes provisions for victims to collaborate with the CBE on policy and training improvements. David Corrigan, the attorney representing the plaintiffs, stated that the settlement is a significant step toward recovery for the victims, some of whom have been dealing with the effects of the abuse for up to 40 years. He mentioned that the lawsuit involves 40 alleged victims, with the possibility for more individuals to join if the court approves the settlement. No date has been set for the court to review the settlement. The CBE reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. The case has highlighted the need for ongoing advocacy to prevent similar incidents in the future, as many class members plan to continue their efforts in this area.
