TUSCALOOSA, Ala. —
A special march is underway in Alabama to raise more awareness of military veteran suicide.
Student veterans from Alabama and Auburn began Operation Iron Ruck on Wednesday at the Walk of Champions in Tuscaloosa, embarking on a three-day hike.
More than 160 student veterans are participating in the event, hiking approximately 50 miles to Auburn.
Each participant carries 22 pounds of supplies and 22 dog tags to honor the estimated 22 veterans lost to suicide each day.
The march also includes delivering the ceremonial game ball for the Iron Bowl.
Organizers say the march is designed to raise awareness and strengthen support for veterans across Alabama.
