ROYAL OAK, MI – The Detroit Zoo is bidding adieu to a 6-year-old Bactrian camel named Tula.

In a post on social media Wednesday , the zoo announced Tula died on Monday, Nov. 24, marking the third loss to its camels within the last few years. A team of veterinarians and animal care experts “made the difficult decision” to euthanize Tula, the zoo said, after a lengthy effort to combat the effects of a degenerative ligament condition.

Born at the zoo in 2019, Tula was named for a river in Mongolia. According to the zoo, she “quickly became a beloved member of the zoo family.”

“Known for her bold personality and sharp intelligence, Tula was a favorite among her care team, who loved working with her,” the zoo said, “especially during care-based training sessions.”
