Thanksgiving is here and state officials are reminding families to prevent food waste, which is expected to reach around 300 million pounds nationwide.
"Food waste comprises roughly 24% of all the waste in a landfill," said an expert. "Think about that. One fourth as a waste in a landfill is food waste."
Many families have already started preparing their meals and the question is whether families will eat all the food they prepare.
"A recent study estimates it's about 40% of the food waste generated on Thanksgiving Day is turkey," said Richard Chesley with the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services. He noted that dairy products are a close second.
