TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - The government shutdown cost the economy billions of dollars, and it could happen again come January.

That’s why lawmakers from Louisiana and Mississippi are trying to extend flood insurance funding through next year, because that had a huge impact on the housing market.

Past government shutdowns have led to 1,400 home sales being delayed across the country every day, which includes nearly 20 a day in Arizona.

“We’d really like for Congress to quit kicking the can down the road,” said Romeo Arrieta, CEO of the Tucson Association of REALTORS .

He said that since 2017, Congress has passed 34 short-term extensions for the National Flood Insurance Program.
