GILMER, Texas (KLTV) -Student athletes from Gilmer High School served free Thanksgiving meals to community members Wednesday at the Yamboree blue building.

“We are out here serving the community, because at the end of the day, we’re all family here in Gilmer and East Texas so why not get back to our family,” said Markayla Tate, a Gilmer student athlete.

The football team typically participates in playoffs during the holiday season, but this year’s playoff run ended early. Coach Alan Metzel said the volunteer opportunity provides a learning experience for his players.
