In 1933, playwright Sidney Kingsley reportedly walked through a Manhattan slum and watched kids swimming in the filthy East River. Beyond this shabbiness was a nearby luxury building. The juxtaposition of the poor and the privileged inspired him to write the play Dead End . It was the first project to feature the so-called “Dead End Kids,” known later as the “Bowery Boys,” who went on to play similar characters in quite a few B-picture comedies.
