GRETNA, La. —

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating an in-custody death that happened Thursday morning at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.

According to JPSO, around 4 a.m., a deputy was conducting security checks and saw that the inmate in the Intake booking area appeared to be unresponsive. Advertisement

The jail medical staff and Gretna EMS attempted to revive the inmate but were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead on the scene.

The inmate was a 68-year-old man being held as a fugitive from another jurisdiction. He was originally arrested on Nov. 21, 2025.

At this point in the investigation, they don't suspect foul play.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office.
