A recent decision by the Supreme Court of Canada has delayed a verdict in a human trafficking case being heard at the Montreal courthouse because it calls into question whether drivers for sex workers are considered part of their protection or facilitators for pimps.

On Thursday, Quebec Court Judge Joëlle Roy asked prosecutor Véronique Warthold and defence lawyer Sharon Sandiford for their opinions on a case Canada’s highest court ruled on in July.

“It was my duty,” Roy said while explaining why she delayed her decision in the case against Mohamed Louchahi, 35, of Montreal North. “It appears (the Supreme Court of Canada decision) will be very important in my decision.”
