A serious crash on the M25 has led to significant traffic disruptions this afternoon, with vehicles at a standstill. The incident occurred between junctions 2 and 3, specifically from the A2 at the Darenth Interchange to the M20 at the Swanley Interchange. Traffic monitoring service Inrix reported that the M25 clockwise is blocked, resulting in stationary traffic and congestion extending to junction 30, near Lakeside and Purfleet. The situation has been ongoing since approximately 2.30pm.

As of 3.20pm, recovery work is underway, but one lane remains blocked, contributing to very slow traffic conditions. Inrix confirmed, "M25 clockwise blocked, stationary traffic due to accident from J2 A2 (Darenth Interchange) to J3 M20 J1 (Swanley Interchange). Congestion to J30 (Lakeside/Purfleet). Ongoing since around 14:30."

Emergency services have been contacted for further details, but it is currently unclear how many vehicles were involved in the collision or if there have been any injuries reported.

In a separate incident earlier today, motorists faced chaos on the M25 due to another crash between junctions 16 and 17. Although this incident was cleared by 7.30am, severe delays persisted, with traffic cameras showing long queues. Additionally, a van fire on the link road from M25 junction 12 to M3 junction 2 caused further delays of around 30 minutes, with congestion stretching back to junction 14 near Heathrow Airport.

Meanwhile, on the M5, an overturned van has caused significant delays, with three of four lanes closed northbound between junctions 6 for Worcester and 5 for Wychbold. National Highways reported delays of up to 90 minutes and five miles of congestion, warning motorists to expect delays until midday.

As traffic continues to build on these major routes, drivers are advised to seek alternative routes where possible and to stay updated on traffic conditions.
