COLUMBIA, S.C. — Authorities are investigating the cause of a commercial fire that happened in a residential area off of Garners Ferry Road on Thanksgiving Day.

The fire reportedly began sometime around 11 a.m. on True Street. Columbia-Richland Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said units were called to a small warehouse on the street, where smoke was already coming from the building. Passersby told News19 that the smoke was also visible from a busy section of Garners Ferry Road nearby.

Jenkins said the warehouse was used for woodworking, but that no one was at the location when the fire occurred. The chief estimated the damage at close to half a million dollars, including the building and its contents.
