How to write the map for congressional districts has proven problematic for a long time here in Maryland and across the nation. But what has happened over the last month has elevated this troublesome issue to a full-blown crisis. To be clear, the cause of this latest dust-up threatening a cornerstone of our democracy is President Donald Trump. His demand from Republicans across the nation to redistrict mid-cycle has the obvious goal of achieving gains in the House of Representatives in the midterms. Taking partisan redistricting to this level is absurd. If it happens now, it will be a never-ending cycle.
