The design for a statue of Nelson Mandela which is set to be put in Nelson Mandela Place has been revealed. Glasgow was the first city in the world to award its freedom to Nelson Mandela in 1981, when he was still in prison before he became president in 1994.
The leader of South Africa's anti-apartheid movement visited the city in 1993 after he had been released from jail in 1990. Now the winning design for a statue of the former South African president has been revealed.
Sculptor Alan B Herriot created the winning statue design and he has been selected to create the statue after a competition which led to five artists being shortlisted to produce a maquette, or model for the statue which will stand in the city's Nelson Mandela Place.
