Vancouver Giants winger Cameron Schmidt might be the quickest skater in the WHL this season, so it’s somewhat fitting that Friday he tied a league record for fastest goal from the start of a game, tallying a mere five seconds in.
Schmidt pounced on the puck after it squirted toward the Penticton Vees’ blue line off the opening faceoff at the South Okanagan Events Centre. Schmidt chipped it past the Vees defender Callum Stone and then wired a wrister from the top of the right faceoff circle low blocker side past netminder Andrew Reyelts.
Schmidt’s tally equalled the mark set by Seattle Thunderbirds centre Dean Sexsmith, who scored five seconds into a Jan. 30, 1987 game against the Victoria Cougars. Seattle won that game 7-6, and Vancouver recorded a one-goal triumph Friday, taking a 3-2
