Early morning fires destroyed four buildings today on Kinoole and Keawe streets in downtown Hilo.

The fire caused police to close off multiple streets in the area as Hawaii Fire Department and utility crews remained on the scene sifting through the ruins and repairing damaged lines.

Police and firefighters responded to alarms reports of the fires shortly before 1 a.m., according to the Hawaii Police Department.

The fires occurred at the corner of Kinoole and Haili streets, plus on the 100 block of Keawe Street.

Police said arriving responders found four buildings fully engulfed in flames.

Police and fire personnel immediately began efforts to evacuate the affected buildings, as well as nearby residences and residential complexes.
