The 19-year-old victim of the Newark shooting earlier this month that left three dead and two others injured was the protector of his family, his cousin said.
Masi Rogers died last Thursday from injuries he sustained during the Nov. 15 shooting at the corner of Chancellor Avenue and Leslie Street, officials said.
Two others, 10-year-old Jordan Garcia and 21-year-old Kiyah Mae Scott , were also killed, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
No arrests or charges have been announced.
Jabir Brinkley, Rogers’ second cousin, said the teen deeply cared for his mother and four siblings.
“His primary goal in life is just to make sure he could be the best protector to his family. … Just anything that he could do, just be close by to them to take care of them,” Brinkley said.
