Investigators are exploring the motivations behind the recent shooting of National Guardsmen in Washington, D.C., which left one guard dead and another seriously injured. Sources indicate that the suspect, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, faced significant financial stress and potential mental health issues.
Lakanwal's situation may have worsened following the death of an Afghan commander he reportedly admired. This loss has compounded his existing financial difficulties, which include unemployment, an expired work permit, and struggles to provide for his wife and five children. He traveled from Washington state to the nation’s capital before the shooting, targeting the Guardsmen.
A senior law enforcement source stated that investigators are examining the suspect's deteriorating home life as part of their inquiry. The FBI, Homeland Security, and intelligence officials are also looking into whether the attack was inspired or directed by international terrorist groups. However, no evidence has been publicly linked to any terrorist organization, and no terror charges have been filed against Lakanwal.
The shooting occurred on November 26, just blocks from the White House. One Guardsman died from her injuries the following day. President Donald Trump condemned the act, calling it "an act of evil, an act of hatred and an act of terror," and criticized the previous administration for the suspect's entry into the U.S.
Lakanwal arrived in the United States from Afghanistan in September 2021. He had previously worked with the U.S. government, including the CIA, as part of a partner force in Kandahar. His asylum application was approved in April 2024 under the Trump administration. In Afghanistan, he was associated with the Zero Unit, collaborating closely with the CIA and Joint Special Operations Command on counterterrorism missions.
As the investigation continues, the FBI is interviewing Lakanwal's family and associates. They are also analyzing documents and digital materials obtained from searches of his mobile devices and social media accounts. Lakanwal remains hospitalized under heavy guard as the investigation unfolds.
