A tourist tax for the Liverpool City Region – what you need to know

After years of campaigning by politicians, a ‘tourist tax’ will likely be applied to overnight stays in the Liverpool City Region in two years’ time. Ahead of last week’s Budget Communities Secretary Steve Reed has confirmed the area’s Combined Authority will be given the ability to add a charge on hotels in the city.

This will be different to the existing Accommodation BID levy that came into effect earlier this year. The powers granted to the Metro Mayor would be used once this expires in December 2027. The new levy will feature two important distinctions – one operating for the entire city region and a levy for Airbnb-style properties.
