Shopify, a leading e-commerce platform, has experienced significant outages on Cyber Monday, a peak shopping day for online retailers. Reports of login issues began around 9 a.m. ET, with thousands of businesses struggling to access their accounts. Users took to social media to express their frustration, labelling the situation as "embarrassing." In a statement on X, Shopify acknowledged the problem, stating, "We're aware of an issue with Admins impacting selected stores, and are working to resolve it. For the most up-to-date information, please refer to our status page. Thank you for your patience." At the height of the outage, over 4,000 retailers reported difficulties accessing the site. Shopify, based in Canada, is one of the largest independent e-commerce platforms globally, serving more than five million customers and processing nearly $300 billion in transactions in 2024, according to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. While Shopify is known for enabling small businesses to establish online stores, it also supports major brands such as Nestlé, PepsiCo, Kraft, Heinz, Whole Foods, and Red Bull. Despite ongoing efforts to restore service, many users expressed dissatisfaction. One user remarked, "Shopify going down on Cyber Monday has got to be one of the biggest fails of the year." Cyber Monday, which occurs the Monday after Thanksgiving in the U.S., is a significant event for online shopping, featuring substantial discounts and promotions. Another user commented, "How embarrassing @Shopify has been down all morning on literally the biggest sales day of the year for online shops, specifically SMALL BUSINESSES. They should refund EVERYONE's fees this month." A third user, who relies on the platform for their business, stated, "Absolutely wild that it's been over 2 hours of Shopify Admin being down on Cyber Monday. 2 hours. I had almost everything planned and automated ahead of time, but can imagine many merchants are suffering, unable to edit prices or text on their theme or things like that." As the situation unfolds, Shopify has been contacted for further updates regarding the outage and its potential causes.
