Hyphenated name comes with a cost

The first time I experienced the "tax" was when my son's soccer shirt came back with a separate surcharge, an extra $5 we would have to pay because of the length of our last name. To be clear, our family name is – at 11 letters – a little longer than most. But the issue was not really with the number of letters themselves, but with the hyphen that connects its two words.
