OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney has appointed Montreal MP Marc Miller as the new Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture. This announcement was made this afternoon. Miller previously served in former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet from 2019 to 2025 but was not included in Carney's cabinet until now.
Miller takes over the role from Steven Guilbeault, who resigned from the cabinet on Thursday. Guilbeault's departure followed the announcement of a new agreement between Ottawa and Alberta regarding a proposed pipeline.
In addition to Miller's appointment, Government Transformation Minister Joël Lightbound will now serve as Carney's lieutenant in Quebec, filling the gap left by Guilbeault. Environment and Climate Change Minister Julie Dabrusin has also taken on additional responsibilities, now overseeing the nature portfolio as well.
Guilbeault had a significant tenure as the Minister of Environment for four years before Carney assumed office. He also held the position of Minister of Heritage from 2019 to 2021. Alongside his new role in culture, Miller has also been designated as the Minister for Official Languages.
This reshuffling of cabinet positions reflects Carney's efforts to strengthen his administration following recent changes in leadership. The appointments are expected to influence the government's approach to cultural and environmental policies moving forward.
