Canada has reached a deal to join the European Union’s €150 billion ($244 billion Cdn.) military procurement fund, Defence Minister David McGuinty said, though the access fee has yet to be announced.

McGuinty said Monday the nation has successfully negotiated entry to the Security Action for Europe program, or SAFE, unlocking billions of dollars in defence opportunities for Canadian businesses.

“This will allow Canada for example to participate by supplying capabilities such as ammunition, missiles, drones, artillery systems, infantry weapons and beyond,” he said.

He described the opportunities for Canada as “enormous,” and argued it would catalyze private investment in the country while attracting new, reliable suppliers for the country’s own defence needs.
