Homestead was the final Fort Wayne-area boys basketball team left standing in last year's state tournament.

The Spartans, who opened their season with a 4-3 record with losses to Warsaw, New Haven and Bishop Luers had been on a tear since Christmas break, winning 16 of 17 games before reaching the semistate semifinals, where the season ended with a loss to Crown Point at Elkhart's North Side Gym.

It was Homestead's first trip to semistate since 2015, when the Spartans won their first and only state title.

"It makes it seem much more real, just having that taste, and it makes me more hungry to get back," junior guard Jake Coolman said. "I know that if we did it once, we can definitely get back there, and I'll be even more experienced and know that that comes with."
