A 363-page tome from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has finally spelled out that police were in the wrong over the Hillsborough disaster . ‌

That black April day in 1989 when 97 Liverpool fans were crushed to death in a stadium pen was a tragedy that will never be forgotten. ‌

But South Yorkshire Police’s bungling and subsequent cover-ups have never properly been brought to light. ‌

Now we know it was their “deep ­complacency” and “fundamental failures” that contributed to the disaster. And there was a “concerted effort” by police to blacken the reputation of innocent football supporters after the catastrophe.
